Planning Mens Wardrobe
I am constantly getting asked, “What should my husband wear for pictures”? Men and young boys are the easiest to dress for family photography sessions. Moms and children have the option to borrow outfits from my Curated Closet which makes their life easy. I find men picky about their wardrobe options, so I have them bring something from their own closet they feel comfortable wearing.
It’s easier to find a dress or outfit that mom loves and revolve the whole photo session wardrobe around that piece of clothing. A man’s outfit can be complementary to what the woman and children are wearing. My photography style is modern-classic, timeless, and natural while aiming to capture real heartwarming moments between families. Colors that work great for a man are white, off-white, grey, blue, green, and denim.
My favorite stores to shop online for reasonably priced menswear are:
Types of Men’s Styles
Basics are best when it comes to a man’s wardrobe. I tell clients to think about where they would like the photos displayed when thinking about their outfits. Are the photos going to be hung in your formal dining room? If so, dressy options would be perfect for this! Are they going to be hung above your bed or in your bathroom? A better fit would be a casual look. There are three categories of outfits I recommend for sessions: dressy, dressy-casual, and casual everyday wear.
Dressy
Dressy can consist of a blazer paired with a button up shirt, slacks, and oxford shoes. Typically, photographs taken in this outfit selection have more formal poses and are not as playful and loose, but nonetheless still beautiful and timeless.
Dressy casual
A dressy casual outfit is a nice medium that still allows for flexibility. Some men dislike wearing constricting clothing like blazers, so wearing a button up and khakis looks very classic. Sleeves can be rolled up or down and buttoned. Shirts can be untucked to keep a relaxed style. A linen shirt is a great way to allow some movement. Sperry boots or shoes are a perfect pairing with this style.
Casual
Lastly, the casual outfit is usually my favorite on men for many reasons. Think of your best self in your everyday clothes, slightly more polished. It completely allows comfort for the man during a time most men dread. They can freely throw their child in the air, sit comfortably on the ground, or chase their kids without any clothing restrictions. I would pair a plain T-shirt or henley shirt with dark denim, khakis, or a colored pant. If you want those snuggly moments and natural everyday look, this is the outfit I recommend.
Whatever fits your family dynamic, personality, home, or comfort level is perfect for me! There is not a right or wrong outfit style. I am always happy to help put together a cohesive look for the entire family because I believe outfit choice can make or break your session.
